Of course if you have friends to play with that are also new that will make it much better. I was playing Melee for years before it felt like I was average.Įither way it's going to be more harsh compared to other games you've played - mostly because it just isn't as popular combined with the lack of a ranked mode to match you up with people your level. Humble (not humble) brag, but I can sometimes scrape the average competitive rank in a few weeks for some games (mostly shooters). The average player is pretty good, much better than other games I've played. That said I still think Melee is pretty unique in that it has very few low level players (at least in comparison to people who have been playing for years). Wasn't always like that, so it's a good time to start. With Slippi Skill-Based Matchmaking and all these beginner Discords/tournmanets though I think you can consistently play with others who don't know this "advanced" stuff. L-cancelling, wavedashing, dash-dancing, short-hopping and shield-dropping are all essential if you want to play "properly". If you want to get better you're gonna have to grind, at-least at the start. I just worry about the tech ceiling is as impossible as they say it is and if it would be fun or just a grind. I find watching top level tournament Melee pretty incredible. If you just enjoy watching then just watch - you don't even have to play to enjoy it. Well, first of all give it a fair chance and watch more. My eyes drift towards melee every once in a while. Smaller studios have tried and they either can't make it work or they're pretty much just indie games. unless a huge studio makes an attempt at a platform fighter that uses a lot of Melee mechanics. It has the best and most unique mechanics of any game so I don't think it will ever die.
